Machocorridos: Paquita La Del Barrio Eat Your Heart Out!
¡Uyy!  It takes a lot to get a only a one word response out of me.  Usually when something ignites or inspires me in any way I can go and on forever, but this time this album really takes the cake.  Turns out the Mexican comedian known as El Norteño – yeah I don’t know who he is either – has recently launched a new music album in response to all those “men-hating” musical compilations put together by the likes of Paquita La Del Barrio over the years titled, quite simply really, Los Machocorridos! Las Jilguerillas de Michoacan
You know that feeling when something seems so familiar to you even though it really isn’t?  That’s what Las Jilguerillas have always represented to me.  A couple of years ago, probably about 10 or so, I first came across their music.  How or when I don’t really recall now, though if I had to guess I’d say Univision and they’re telenovelasprobably had something to do with it. The Cultural Significance of the Sombrero
My father very rarely wore a sombrero out.  Instead he’d wear a cap or nothing at all.  For him, the sombrero was a tool like any other: a hammer, a nail, a rusty set of pliers, used to shield his eyes and face from the scorching heat.  A game sometimes, when we were all at home playing sorilla. It was my brothers and I that wore the sombrero as a statement, for a short time as teenagers – the same reason my sisters would wear it for Tejano dances and Norteño clubs.  Quinces, weddings, baptisms, and anywhere else we could get away with wearing a sombrero, we would. How to tell if you’re at a Pachanga?

It should be pretty simple to tell.  I mean you can’t pass off a tamal or a torta for an hors d’oeuvre, much less frijoles pintos or asado… though in all fairness, word around the street is that these new gourmet food trucks are doing wonderful things with our comida.  But for this question I figured (well Anjelica pointed it out to me) that it would be better to let Los Metiches answer for all of us.

When I went to Atlanta we went to eat at this fancy new age organic restaurant - definitely not my choice - and while the food was not bad, what I found most interesting was that while the restaurant did not sell any soda products, they did offer us Mexican Coca Cola?  Everyone at the table was sort of confused (all non-Latinos)… why only Mexican Coca Cola?  Inevitably everyone turned and looked at me, hahaha!  The designated Mexican! Though before I even had a chance to answer the waiter says: “it’s made with actual sugar cane not high-fructose corn syrup.”  I just smiled and agreed.  In reality I was just as confused as everyone else.
